Halloween fun and outdoor education will make for another exciting event at Hawthorn Glen
Milwaukee Recreation’s fun and educational alternative to the usual haunted house is returning for its 27th year. Halloween Glen encourages youth to learn about nature through an interactive program in the outdoor setting of Hawthorn Glen, Milwaukee Recreation’s 23-acre nature center at 1130 N. 60th St. The program will run every 15 minutes from 5:45 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. on Friday, October 9 and from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 10.
Actors will present interactive and educational skits at eight elaborately decorated stations along the trail of Hawthorn Glen. After each hike, children will receive a treat and a take-home craft kit. The event is geared toward ages 3-12 and parent(s)/guardian(s), but all are welcome to attend. A Tyke Hike is also offered for younger participants, where tour guides will lead tykes and their families on a hike through four of the eight stations.
“We are thrilled to welcome families back for another year of Halloween Glen,” says Recreation Supervisor Nicole Sponholtz. “Our talented group of actors will be dressing up as wild creatures and are excited to present their educational skits to the community. This year might look a little different than others, as we have many social distancing measures and safety precautions in place. But we will still be able to offer a fun and interactive experience for kids and their families this year, even from six feet apart!”
There will be additional safety protocols and COVID-19 precautions taken at this year’s event. Milwaukee Recreation will take necessary precautions to align with the Centers for Disease Control and/or City of Milwaukee Health Department recommendations. Precautions taken will include smaller group sizes, physical distancing, use of face coverings, and implementing additional cleaning protocols. Recommendations may change as the event approaches.
Registration for the event is required in advance by completing the online registration form which can be found at mkerec.net/HalloweenGlen. Participants will check in at a registration tent located at the trail entrance upon arrival at Hawthorn Glen.
New this year, to maximize social distancing, Milwaukee Recreation will NOT be using buses to transport participants from the Central Services building to Hawthorn Glen. Instead, participants are being asked to park in the Hawthorn Glen parking lot at 1130 N. 60th St. Parking will be limited at Hawthorn Glen, therefore participants are being asked to arrive no more than 20 minutes before a scheduled session. Please note, parking on 60th St. will not be permitted.
