Respect for the black dollar is a movement that more are adapting, noticing the gap of appreciation for black spenders amongst companies. Apparel companies like Gucci who released the “black face” sweater, and Dove soap with multiple racially insensitive ads, have shown the lack of respect for African American customers. More recently, when information leaked that Starbucks would not allow its workers to wear anything supportive of the Black Lives Matter movement , social media handles quickly erupted with outage. The email that was sent internally stated that support would violate policy against accessories that “advocated a political, religious or personal issue,” according to Buzzfeed News. It was also reported that the company allowed many other forms of so called “personal protest,” most notably LGBT support apparel. They have since retracted that email and sent one in support. Proving that this Black Lives Matter is not one to take lightly, We are tired. The move also represents the new level of respect, being put on the black dollar. In Milwaukee from June 14th until the 19th community members have put together a week of black spending, with many businesses being listed on Mkeblack.org. Let’s support each other while staying safe.
