26 year old, medical worker, Breonna Taylor was killed by Louisville Police back in March. She was sleeping in her apartment when 3 officers decided to enter on a “no-knock warrant”. Upon entering, Breonna Taylor’s boyfriend fired a single shot; for he had no idea of who entered the premises.
That bullet struck an officer, although there’s no evidence to prove that the bullet the office was struck with truly came from his gun. Nonetheless, in return the officers fired 40 bullets back. Eight of those bullets struck Breonna and killed her immediately.
After months of freedom upon the event, no officers have been charged with the death of Ms. Taylor. All the officers have been fired but little to nothing more.
The grand jury charged Brett Hankison was 3 counts of “Wanton Endangerment of the 1st degree”. He incurred these charges because he shot through a sliding glass door, endangering a pregnant woman, a man, and a child. These were Breonna’s neighbors, the ones that weren’t shot.
This is a sickening verdict. It seems the last thing the state of Kentucky wants to do is charge these men with the death of an innocent black girl.
What’s interesting is that out of 12 neighbors, it took 6 months for one neighbor to state that the police identified themselves prior to entering. On a previous recording, this particular neighbor originally said the police did not identify themselves. After 6 months, the question is why did the story change?
There’s nothing that I like about this case. I haven’t liked it from the get go. Having experienced getting robbed and shot in the leg in the past, I know first hand that when an incident happens all parties knowingly involved are separated and questioned. You don’t get months to come up with a story.
This entire case is a shame and a disgrace. It’s sad—not surprising but hurtful. Breonna Taylor deserves justice and the fact that she is not getting it is beyond disrespectful.
We won’t be silent.
