“No one wakes up saying, I don’t want to do anything, I want to be poor, helpless.”
“Don’t matter if you on drugs, 5 kids, feeling tired you can still be somebody!” This powerful statement was said at the end of the interview, but I placed it at the beginning why? Simply because it defined Danielle McClendon as a human, great human being.
Running for the district 10 seat on the Board of supervisors m, McClendon offers more than experience and connections.
She’s Compassionate, relatable, overall fighter for the people, because she has fought her entire life.
“ I am a survivor of gun violence,” said McClendon who watched her mother, and other family members loose their life to guns. Her first statement after my question “who are you?” Despite growing up without a strong parental presence, she overcame teen pregnancy, dropping out of school, and a plethora of other life events. “I’m running on learned experiences ” says McClendon, who took me back to my late grand parents when she said, “you can’t teach a old man how to drive a Bentley, if you never drove one.” She went on to say, “and he can’t teach me how to drive a ‘99 Buick.” Having lived a life full of set backs, she attributes her strength to overcome to her faith in God, as well as accessibility of resources.
