According to recent studies, the impact of the coronavirus is pervasive. Children are worried for their families’ safety and stability. They are disappointed that they can’t see friends or play sports. Some struggle with distance learning or worse.
In addition, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) survey highlights the serious psychological and emotional impact of the Coronavirus pandemic for Americans from all walks of life.
The CDC survey shows increases in the following areas when compared to the previous year:
- Anxiety disorder symptoms (25.5% versus 8.1%),
- Depressive Disorder (24.3% versus 6.5%).
- Started or Increased Substance Abuse (13.3%)
- Suicidal Thoughts (10.7% versus 4.3%)
To help young people and their families better connect with mental health and substance abuse resources, The Social Development Commission is kicking off its “Rise Above the Influence” campaign.
SDC will host a variety of activities. As part of this campaign, middle school and high school students have an opportunity to use art and poetry to creatively express their feelings about substance abuse and mental health issues. With the contest over, winners will be announced and publicly recognized at this event.
