Pink Umbrella Theater is today announcing a $10,000 matching grant from the Silverstein Family Charitable Fund – money that will support the hiring of professional teaching artists, keep tuition low, and provide a virtual teaching platform.
“Students and adults with disabilities are losing services in this pandemic, so we are filling that gap through 1:1 classes, ensemble classes, and by offering free classes to the community,” says Katie Cummings, Pink Umbrella Theater executive director and founder.
Pink Umbrella hosted 57 students during the summer, and employed 20 teaching artists and administrators. Classes focused on social and emotional growth through theater.
Pink Umbrella Theater is the newest affiliate member of Milwaukee’s United Performing Arts Fund. It is a safe and structured learning environment where people of all abilities are welcome. Its focus is on people in our community who have, or who identify with, intellectual, physical or emotional disabilities.
“Pink Umbrella Theater is an inclusive environment providing a platform for Disabled Actors and Artists to do theater together,” says Cummings, who founded the group in September of 2018. “We look forward to continuing to engage families and friends in theater that is accessible, inclusive and immersive.”

Founded in September 2018, the theater company’s classes are taught by professionally trained artists in acting, musical theater, improvisation, and more. We also offer classes and workshops in partnership with organizations in Milwaukee and surrounding communities, and provide consulting for arts and community organizations seeking to become more accessible and inclusive.
