On Thursday, May 25, the Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression will hold a vigil to commemorate George Floyd and all victims of police crimes. The vigil will begin at 7:30PM in front of the George Floyd mural on the corner of Holton St. and North Ave.
Thursday will mark the 3rd anniversary of George Floyd’s murder by Minneapolis police. Following this brutal crime and the recording of it, protests were led globally. Milwaukee witnessed countless marches and demonstrations demanding justice for police crimes victims and an end to racist repression. George Floyd’s murder struck a chord in Milwaukee. This city has been the site of a long list of police killings. A month before Floyd’s murder, Joel Acevedo, was choked to death by police officer, Michael Mattioli. Acevedo’s family is still in court and is still fighting for justice.
The Milwaukee Alliance has worked closely with many families who have lost loved ones to police violence. Many of them are expected to attend the vigil, as this is a commemoration for their loved ones too. It will soon be 3 years since the killing of George Floyd. The Milwaukee Alliance has been involved in a lot of the necessary work to end police crimes in Milwaukee, but there is a lot more to be done. Thursday’s vigil will be a reminder of why the work against police crimes matters and why police crimes must stop.
The Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (MAARPR) campaigns against police crimes committed primarily against the poor and Black, Indigenous, and people of color. We demand the creation of a civilian police accountability council, or CPAC, to ensure that our community is in direct control of our police force.
