The last day of school is in a few days, so first congratulations to the graduating class and the summer is a wonderful time to enjoy a vacation for all your hard work and it is also a time to sleep in and rejuvenate from the school year. You guys have earned your stripes so enjoy your summer.
Not everyone is able to go on vacation due to the travel prices and our schedules, so I thought of a cool and rewarding way for you to have fun and give back to your community. To volunteer is leadership at its best and we all have skills we can use to help others. You can reach out to local businesses and schools this summer to find opportunities to volunteer or you can be creative and help in your neighborhood or even your own family and friends.
If you have children, let them open their own mock school. They will have a few hours of the day to teach their own class subjects like how to ride a bike, painting, or science.
Another idea is to pick a course they did well in like math or reading and let them teach that to those who may have gotten a lower grade and you can go to the dollar store and buy supplies, stickers and a trophy for a job well done.
After class you all can have lunch together and let the class join in on the process and pick a theme like build your own sandwich. Put out all the sandwich fixings and let the class make their own lunch and have chips, cookies, or ice cream on hand as a special treat.
You can even go big and celebrate the end of your mock school year with a prom, school trip to Six Flags, or have your own graduation. The best thing about your school is that you can mix all the grades together and your little teacher will learn how to volunteer their time to help others and be responsible.
Volunteering does not have to be limited to the classroom, you can take the students to clean up the neighborhood, cut lawns or plant a garden. Whichever you decide, do something you love to help someone else.
Have a wonderful summer!
