Last Wednesday I had the pleasure of sitting in on an amazing proposal put together by Director Aisha Carr, regarding a 4 day school week for MPS Students. The proposal was not to cut a day off for students to attend school but rather to provide an opportunity for student to tap into creativity, mental health practices, and more on the 5th day.
I was extremely intrigued by this proposal for more reasons than one. One being, the fact that what’s in place currently is clearly not working for public school attendee’s. While a new school (system) seems so far fetched, it’s not when we, as parents, teachers, staff members, and even business owners decide to act on what could potentially make this a reality.
Everyone in the room was asked to ask 10 people to call the district board member to express how this could be a great move for our students, let alone the community. I believe there’s more than 10 people on my timeline with serious concern of MPS students. With a system like this in place, it will provide a chance for kids to tap into their skill sets and even focus on healthier mental practices.
This also benefits the small businesses and professionals that may want to provide internship opportunities and those that would like to mentor kids along the way. This means as kids learn new things, local businesses will have the opportunity to contract with the school board.
Not to mention, statistics show that adults would work better with a four day week, so what could be the outcome if kids could also have a day to be more relaxed, academically.
Here is the proposal itself. Check it out!

Let’s play are part the best way we can. Let’s work for change. Without us, the community, we are nothing.
