Milwaukee School Board Director, Aisha Carr, will host two Town Hall meetings. One will be held today, Wednesday, March 27th, at Washington High School located at 2525 North Sherman Blvd. The second will be held on Thursday, March 28th, at MPS Central Services Office located at 5225 West Vliet Street. Both events will be held from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. The purpose for the town halls is to ignite dialogue and share invaluable insight relative to the $252 million referendum.
A statement issued by Director Carr: “As the elected Representative of MPS District 4, a community grappling with profound challenges yet brimming with untapped potential, I am motivated by an unwavering commitment to advocate tirelessly for greater outcomes of our children and families. District 4 stands as the largest, most under-resourced, and impoverished district within MPS, a blatant reality compounded by its status as the highest revenue-generating district. Yet, the one district in MPS with the highest teacher vacancy rates and lowest academic outcomes. My dedication centers on uplifting our children, enhancing teaching standards, and demanding accountability from our leaders. However, the opaque handling of the referendum by MPS underscores the urgent need for transparency and accountability. It is unacceptable that despite these facts, inequitable resource allocation persists, perpetuating the cycle of poverty and underperformance, particularly among black and brown students, schools and communities in district 4. Because of this, I staunchly oppose the $252 million referendum, not out of doubt in our students’ and teachers’ abilities, but due to the glaring failure of leadership to equitably support the greatest needs of those in district 4. I implore all to push past our political divisions and unite in our pursuit of educational excellence in the City of Milwaukee. Since starting on the Board in 2021, I have been unwavering in my commitment to provide unfiltered facts to educate and empower my constituents to make informed decisions. Until we rectify the historic systemic inequities in our public school system, my vote remains a resolute ‘NO’ on the referendum and a fervent ‘YES’ for accountability, transparency and better outcomes. Supporting a referendum devoid of transparency and public accountability undermines educational democracy, leading to increased expenditure and further deterioration of our academic and social outcomes. Our children, families, and communities desperately need and deserve better.”
The Town Hall meetings are free and open to the public. Doors will be open at 5:00 PM with the presentations beginning promptly at 5:40 PM, followed by a Q&A and a ‘Call-to-Action’.
Thank you for your support and I hope to see you all soon!
