Local student’s award-winning art will be installed on exterior of King Hall
MILWAUKEE – The Marcus Performing Arts Center announced today that a 12’x 12’ mural will be installed on the north side of the King Hall building, located at 3413 N. Doctor M.L.K. Jr Dr. in the Harambee neighborhood. The mural will feature an image of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in honor of the Marcus Center’s annual MLK birthday celebration. Grace Collins, the award-winning artist, is a 9th grader at Reagan IB High School.
“Our annual event celebrating Dr. King’s birthday is something we look forward to every year,” said Kendra Whitlock Ingram, President and CEO of the Marcus Center. “We are thrilled to continue the legacy of this celebration through the installation of this mural. Every year, talented students participate in the art contest, and we are proud to display that art for the entire Milwaukee community.”
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration is an annual event that highlights the youth in the Milwaukee community who interpret Dr. King’s words through different contests in art, speech and writing. The event will take place virtually on Sunday, January 17, 2021.
“TRUE Skool has a great partnership with the Marcus Center, and this public art project with King Hall is a meaningful way to showcase student-created artwork, community collaboration and Dr. King’s timeless legacy on a large scale,” said Fidel Verdin, co-executive director of TRUE Skool Milwaukee. “Visual Art is an essential part of TRUE Skool’s mission and programs and also an essential part of early childhood education.”
Materials for the installation were generously provided by Hallman Lindsey. The artwork will remain on King Hall for a year.
