Salvation Army Chaplains To Provide Meals For MPD Officers
MILWAUKEE – In honor of National Police Week and the five year anniversary of The Salvation Army of Milwaukee County’s Chaplaincy Program, Salvation Army chaplains and leadership will be providing lunch to-go bags to the Milwaukee Police Department.
About 1,000 lunches will be dropped off at Districts 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 on May 12, 13, 14 and 15.
The Chaplaincy Program is a partnership between The Salvation Army of Milwaukee County and the Milwaukee Police Department. The chaplains are called to critical incidents when police determine emotional and spiritual care is needed, including fatal accidents, house fires, homicides, drug overdoses, and suicides.
“This is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to the officers for their hard work, service, and sacrifice in the community. We couldn’t do what we have done the last five years in the city, caring for victims of trauma and violence, without the great partnership with the police department,” said Pastor Alexis Twito, Chaplain Coordinator. “It really is something to celebrate!”
Since May 2015 to now, Salvation Army Chaplains have:
- Responded to 375 emergency call-outs with the Milwaukee Police Department.
-
- Of those 375 calls, 104 of them were homicides, 43 were infant deaths, and 36 were suicides.
- Have made 3,053 emotional and spiritual care contacts to individuals (since 2018, when we started collecting this statistic).
-
- Notably, our chaplains were present to support the police and community after the Sherman Park unrest in 2016, and in 2019 at Moody Park. Chaplains also provided police-officer support after multiple line-of-duty deaths of MPD officers in 2018 and 2019. And they were present on-scene and in the aftermath of the MillerCoors mass shooting to provide crisis care and resources to employees.
- Trained 133 people, and they currently have 55 active chaplains from diverse racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds.
- Established The Salvation Army Chaplain Support Line, 888-651-7294 (SAWI), which is available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day.
- Put in more than 10,000 volunteer hours since 2015.

Commit to celebrate the Independence Day holiday without violence!
Statement from Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II
July 3, 2019
Today I received yet another notice from the Milwaukee Police Department that their staff is investigating a non-fatal shooting that took place in my aldermanic district early this morning. This time, the victim was a 16-year-old female who was shot after getting into an argument with several people on a social media website. She was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and the search for the suspect who fired the shot continues.
All too often when the weather heats up, my colleagues and I receive these emails and telephone calls about violent acts occurring in our neighborhoods. All too often when we disagree with each other and tempers flare, the outcome leads to a violent act, often involving a gun, a knife, or fists. It doesn’t seem to matter if the issue is a “road rage” incident, or a disagreement with a neighbor or family member, or an online argument, we are resorting to violence rather than talking it out or walking away from a confrontation. And these actions could – and do – lead to physical injury and death.
The 4th of July holiday is upon us, and many of us will be spending time with family and friends to celebrate. We’ll be enjoying each other’s company sharing a meal, cooling off at the beach, listening to great music at Summerfest, and taking in the fireworks displays at the lakefront and in our local parks.
But should the good times ahead take a more serious and confrontational turn, let’s commit to solving our differences without picking up a gun or other weapon, or starting a fight. Take a step back – think through your verbal and physical responses before you act. Violence does not solve the problem but does make the situation worse for all involved.
This summer and going forward, we must all commit to a life without violence. Your life and the lives of your loved ones depend on you – and each of us – making the right decisions.
Concert At Lincoln Park features Christopher’s Project
During the summers in Milwaukee we are known for our many festivals and concerts. The biggest music festival which is known around is Summer Fest.Throughout the summer there are other concerts all around at various parks like Jazz in the Park happening at cathedral Square Park.Chill on the Hill is also a popular one, along with multiple concerts at Lake Park. Great Events, but for some who may live on the north side transportation can be an issue. It is for that reason that I applaud these two neighborhood organizations; the first is Washington Park who hosts concerts every Wednesdays. The second is a newcomer.
The friends of Lincoln Park had their summer kickoff concert on Tuesday at Lincoln Park. Headlining the event was local band Christopher’s Project, who provided a mix of soul and jazz to set the stage. The group, who is no stranger to the stage having opened for the likes of the Temptations, had the crown going early. Attendees of all ages were able to enjoy t music as well as free ice cream provided by the Milwaukee Police Department. Other vendors such as Doctor Dawgs, Petes Pops, were available for purchase.
The event was a success as locals and people from all around were able to come together and enjoy the night. I look forward to more in the summer that are conveniently located for all.
