The Violence Trump Claims to Fear Occurs Mostly in Red States

Donald Trump continues to attack cities and jurisdictions heavily populated by minorities, often painting them as crime-ridden and unsafe despite evidence showing overall declines in many categories of crime. Nowhere is this tension clearer than in Washington, D.C., where residents face relentless scrutiny from Trump while Red States — many with far less diversity — quietly struggle with some of the highest murder rates in the nation.

The District of Columbia recorded the nation’s highest murder rate in 2023 at 39 per 100,000 residents, with 265 murders. Despite local efforts to address violence, Trump routinely depicts the city as unlivable. To many residents, the greater tragedy is not just the crime itself but the reality that the capital of the United States now looks like an occupied third-world country, with National Guard and federal troops visibly stationed throughout the city. Washingtonians, who have already been denied full congressional representation, have become political pawns in Trump’s rhetoric. What Trump avoids mentioning is that several Republican-led states top the list of the deadliest places. Louisiana had a murder rate of 14.5 per 100,000, recording 663 killings in 2023. New Mexico, Alabama, Tennessee, and Arkansas — all governed by Republicans in recent years — also posted murder rates higher than 9 per 100,000 residents.

In Missouri, another GOP stronghold, the murder rate stood at 9.1 per 100,000 with 564 murders, disproportionately concentrated in cities like St. Louis and Kansas City. South Carolina, Alaska, and Georgia each ranked high, while Mississippi, often touted by conservatives as a bastion of “traditional values,” has at times led the nation in murder rates. Meanwhile, states with larger minority populations that Trump targets — including Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Maryland — often have lower murder rates than many of these Red States. Illinois, home to Chicago, recorded a rate of 6.56 per 100,000, below Alabama, Tennessee, and Arkansas.

Critics argue this is no accident. Trump’s fixation on minority-heavy jurisdictions is part of a long-standing strategy of scapegoating urban areas with large Black and Latino populations, while sidestepping the systemic problems facing states where his support is strongest. “Murders were far more common in [Mississippi] than they were nationwide,” the World Population Review reported, with Louisiana, Alabama, Missouri, and Arkansas following close behind. The report’s numbers show that while Trump fixates on minority-heavy cities, the deadliest conditions are playing out in Red States that rarely draw his attention. “Murders are disproportionately concentrated in urban areas, especially in New Orleans and Baton Rouge,” the researchers concluded.

12yr Old Girl Shoots 14yr Old Cousin; Then Herself on Live

Last Monday, in St. Louis, Missouri, a 12yr old and a 14yr old lost their life, due to gun play. As seen on live, the two kids were streaming live, showing off guns, while in a bathroom at a family party.

According to People Magazine, family members say the deaths of cousins Kuaron Harvey and Paris Harvey resulted from a “freak accident”

Police say a 12-year-old girl fatally shot her 14-year-old cousin, then herself, in a live broadcast on Instagram that the girl’s mother portrayed as a “freak accident” that occurred during a family party.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department initially described the deaths of Kuaron Harvey, 14, and Paris Harvey, 12, as a murder-suicide, reports TV station KSDK.

But family members who watched the video said it showed otherwise.

“It was no murder. It wasn’t a suicide,” said Paris’ mother, Shinise Harvey, 35, who did not see the video but heard it described by others, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “It was a freak accident.”

“Everybody was getting together to celebrate, and so the younger kids, they got a bed and breakfast,” Harvey said, according to KSDK.

“They were making a video, and (Paris) was playing with the gun, but it went off and hit him.”

The girl’s grandmother, Susan Dyson, who had seen the Instagram Live video, told the Post-Dispatch: “It wasn’t a situation where they were arguing or anything like that. They were playing with the gun, when they shouldn’t have been. Of course, they shouldn’t have been doing it. I think it just went off. It went off by mistake.”

Police still are investigating who owned the gun and whether anyone might face related charges, reports KSDK. Neither of the children’s mothers was present at the party.

The police department later posted a graphic depicting white lilies to its official Facebook page, along with the words, “We are sending our heartfelt condolences to the family of 12-year-old Paris Harvey & 14-year-old Kuaron Harvey who tragically passed away on 3/25/22.”

This incident is very sad. It’s beyond unfortunate. It shows how kids love to do things for online attention. It demonstrates the importance of knowing where your guns are at all times.

We must do better with keeping guns away from young ones. The video was very short and just like that the kids were gone.

My prayers go out to the family and my hope is that families can do better, whether at a party or not.

St. Louis Elects Tishaura Jones as City’s First Black Woman Mayor

Tishaura Jones began her political career in 2002 as an appointed Democratic Committeewoman of St. Louis’ 8th Ward.

Most recently, Jones served two terms in the Missouri House of Representatives, becoming the state’s first African American and first woman to ascend to the Assistant Minority Floor Leader post.

On April 6, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority sister celebrated another historic first: Jones won the election as the city’s first Black woman mayor.

“Congratulations to our very own chapter Soror Treasurer Tishaura O. Jones on becoming the first African American female Mayor of the City of St. Louis,” The Deltas tweeted.

At her victory speech, Jones pledged to continue working hard for equality.

“It’s time for St. Louis to thrive,” she told a cheering crowd of supporters. “It’s time to bring a breath of fresh air to our neighborhoods.”

“I will work to address inequities in the delivery of city services, and I will not stay silent when I see racism, homophobia, xenophobia, or religious intolerance. I will not stay silent when I spot any injustice,” she declared.

Jones, 49, said her campaign had begun breaking down the historic racial barriers and the racial divides that exist and have existed for generations in St. Louis.

“I’m ready to work,” added Jones, who has served as the city’s treasurer for the past eight years.

Her victory arrives on the heels of Kim Janey’s ascension to mayor in Boston, another major U.S. city that never had a Black woman chief executive officer.

Jones, who holds a bachelor’s degree in Finance from Hampton University, and a master’s in health administration from the Saint Louis University School of Public Health, is an active volunteer with a dedication to public service. She has earned recognition from various organizations, including the Lupus Foundation of America and the St. Louis Coalition for Human Rights.

“Congratulations, Mayor-elect Tishaura Jones,” tweeted District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser. “We’re all rooting for you and St. Louis.”
