After working to repair and build new homes near Washington Park since
2013, Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity has announced an ambitious initiative to
build, rehab and repair 100 homes in the Midtown neighborhood over the next
three years.
According to Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II the Midtown 100 project
will include building 65 new homes, rehabilitating 15 homes and completing
critical repairs on 20 homes, which will allow current residents to remain in their
homes. Milwaukee Habitat has said it will invest $10.3 million in the
neighborhood over the course of the initiative, which will allow the organization to
serve the most families per year in its 34-year history.
The Midtown efforts will take place in the area from North Avenue to
Lisbon Avenue and from 30th to 25th Streets.
“Midtown 100 combats our city’s affordable housing crisis by building the
highest concentration of affordable single-family homes in Milwaukee since
WWII,” Alderman Stamper said. “Milwaukee Habitat will utilize its innovative
partnerships with community-focused organizations to dramatically increase
homeownership opportunities while helping current residents stay in their homes.
I want to thank Habitat its partners for this incredibly valuable initiative in my
district.”
Alderman Stamper said Milwaukee Habitat is reporting positive outcomes from
its efforts in the Washington Park neighborhood since 2013, including a 48% decrease in
violent crime on the blocks that have been revitalized and a nearly 20% increase in
residents who say they feel like they are part of the neighborhood.
Congresswoman Gwen Moore on the Affordable Care Act
To mark the eighth anniversary of the signing of the Affordable Care Act, Congresswoman Gwen Moore (WI-04) took to the House floor to discuss the law’s impact nationwide and in Wisconsin. Below are Congresswoman Moore’s remarks:
Good morning Mr. Speaker, as you recall, eight years ago this week, the Affordable Care Act became law. And since then, we’ve seen a historic increase in health coverage with millions of people gaining access to better, quality healthcare.
Under the ACA, we saw the non-elderly uninsured rate cut almost in half, from 18 to 9.4 percent. Individuals, previously denied coverage due to pre-existing conditions, saw life changing improvements in benefits and coverage. And seniors, who are finally able to spend less on Medicare coverage and prescription drugs, had a chance at a secure and peaceful retirement.
In my state alone, Wisconsin, 224,000 people became covered by ACA exchanges. From 2013 to 2016, the number of uninsured individuals declined by a whopping 42 percent. But we all know, Mr. Speaker, that hardworking Americans were taken advantage of this less expensive superior health care coverage, while, at the same time, the GOP embarked on their all-out war against the ACA. I mean they took no prisoners, hell-bent on sabotaging, butchering, and repealing this law at the expense of our nation’s most vulnerable.
I mean let’s get down to the nitty gritty depths of this depravity. How do you think, for example, Mr. Speaker, that the GOP, this Congress, is going pay for the $1.8 trillion dollar deficit hold created by these tax cuts for the richest Americans and for corporations?
Mr. Speaker, you well know the answer. What we’re going to do is plunder Medicare and Medicaid; we’re going build public sentiment for these actions by demonizing the poor and targeting people who already have limited access to jobs and healthcare. Oh c’mon now, we all know, Mr. Speaker, that you have been dreaming about slashing Medicaid ever since you were drinking at college keg parties—you said so yourself, Mr. Speaker.
Well now, with the help of our president, you’re acting on your dream, your dream is coming true. We’ve already seen an influx of states; including our own state of Wisconsin, submit work requirement waivers. And this administration has already approved three of them, and there are sure to be more.
These attacks are unprecedented. Never has any administration gone this far to kick needy Americans off the only healthcare they have. Our own state’s governor, Scott Walker, is spearheading one of the most restrictive welfare reform proposals in the nation. He wants harsh working requirements, drug testing restrictions, and other barriers to our state’s most at-risk families to access social services. These folks that are being targeted are already struggling to find work, and they’re marginally connected to the workforce—how does throwing them off health care help?
I say we need to uphold the ACA. Thank you for your indulgence, Mr. Speaker, and I yield back.
4 Tips For Men Mentoring Women During A Sensitive Time In The Workplace
Inappropriate behavior toward women in the workplace has sparked a national conversation about sexual harassment. The #MeToo movement exploded on social media, celebrities were embroiled in allegations of sexual misconduct, employers were sued and employees dismissed.
While this tidal wave of public attention has generated some positive change, business leaders and work-culture observers wonder how the fallout will affect male-female working relationships down the road, such as within the mentoring dynamic.
Peter J. Strauss, a business owner and attorney, thinks it’s time to turn the conversation positive and view how male-female mentoring has successfully impacted careers and companies. This time of raised awareness, he says, provides the chance to improve mentoring and make it even more meaningful.
“As a business owner, I would like to encourage my peers to change the tone of this conversation and focus on the many successful male-female work relationships we have each seen, fostered and benefited from,” says Strauss, (www.peterjstrauss.com), a captive insurance manager and author of The Business Owner’s Definitive Guide to Captive Insurance Companies. “A workplace is super-charged by having a mix of well-mentored men and women.
“At a time when men might be pulling away from mentoring to avoid any hint of impropriety with a female colleague, we need more men to mentor women because they’ll be helping to positively change the workplace.”
Strauss offers four tips to male business leaders when mentoring women:
· Focus on professional progress. Rules for mentoring should be the same for a woman mentoring a man or a man mentoring a woman. “What’s the mentor or mentee’s motivation for entering into this mentoring relationship?” asks Strauss. “You focus on skills, talents, goals and competencies. Feedback is constructive. You keep it real by not veering off the track of professional growth.”
· Think of mutual growth. Well-planned and executed mentoring is a win-win for the mentee and mentor. “The mentor can grow substantially from the relationship as well,” Strauss says. “Focus on developing the women and men on your teams through impactful mentoring that elevates both the mentor and the mentee. As a male business owner, I owe a tremendous amount of my own success to the incredible mentorship of my female colleagues. Male business owners need to seek out their female mentors as they add a different dimension to how we plan, execute and build our businesses.”
· Ask if you’re unsure. Colleagues can help you understand what is considered inappropriate behavior and what is acceptable. “Something that was a compliment years ago might be considered an inappropriate comment today,” Strauss says.
· Practice common courtesy, respect. “Treat a female colleague as you would any other colleague,” Strauss says. “Men should take the extra step of educating themselves on the definition of sexual harassment and what it means to women in a professional setting. Be a good listener and exhibit common courtesy, as you would show any person.”
“Male business leaders have a great opportunity here to be great role models, impactful mentors and help women continue to diversify the talent of their companies,” Strauss says.

Year of The Child: First food…fun bites…6-12 months of age
By Angela Wilks-Tate, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, WIC Project Director, Milwaukee Health Services, Inc.
During the first six months of life, your newborn’s digestive system is growing and maturing at an accelerated rate. We like to think of this initial phase as the “construction zone”. We take it easy during this time and exercise caution so the road to good health and nutrition is paved smoothly from the start. Power packed breastmilk is easily digested and is uniquely designed to provide a young infant with a perfect mix of vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, protein and fat to help them grow healthy and strong; When breastmilk is no longer an option, infant formula can serve as a substitute. Eventually, an infant reaches a point where he or she needs to transition from liquid nutrition alone to the addition of solid foods. A very young infant may not be as developed in eating and swallowing solids before 6 months.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)recommends gradual introduction of solid foods around 6 months of age. Offering that first bite is both exciting and a great way to begin building a healthy plate. Early signs of readiness for solids include good head control, sitting up, and the ability to move food from the spoon and swallow without pushing the food away. Solid foods are harder to swallow and require some minor preparation to make them safer to eat. The first foods along this 6-8-month-old journey should begin with Iron fortified infant cereal, mashed or pureed vegetables, fruits, and pureed meats. Introduction of a cup for use with breastmilk or formula is highly recommended at 6 months; juice is not recommended before 12 months.
Meal times should become even more interesting during the 9-12 months of age phase as homemade table foods take a front row seat to those tiny taste buds. Textures take on an entirely new dimension and are bumpier and chunkier. Meal preparation techniques which help prevent choking include mincing and chopping. We will begin to see little fingers reaching out to grab their own foods and attempting to show some level of independence. Offer safe finger foods that are soft or easy to dissolve. Snack chips, raw foods, nuts and seeds are examples of choking hazards and should be avoided. Encourage self-feeding and allow your little one to explore new foods through the sense of touch, smell and sight. Family times should be fun and engaging, so be prepared to clean up some mess as older infants explore a new feeding pattern.
Offering a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables that spans the rainbow can ensure your little one receives optimal nutrition for building a healthier body. Avoid empty calorie foods such as sugary sweetened snacks, puffs and juice or juice drinks. Parents have the wonderful opportunity to build a healthier and strong eater for a lifetime. What you do now can set the tone for future growth and development down the road. The road map to good nutrition begins with you!

Study: reactions vary in children with milk, egg allergy
Although the main approach to coping with food allergies is to avoid the allergenic food, studies have suggested that for milk and egg allergens, consuming them in baked form may be tolerated by most children. However, a study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology shows that for the population of children that cannot tolerate milk or egg in baked form, they may experience significantly different allergic reaction profiles after consuming baked milk or egg.
“Studies suggest that about 70 percent of children allergic to fresh milk and uncooked egg are able to tolerate the baked form of these foods. For children with milk and egg allergies, being able to consume baked forms of these can make a big difference in their everyday lives,” said senior author Dr. Katherine Anagnostou, associate professor of pediatrics in the section of immunology, allergy and rheumatology at Baylor College of Medicine. “This gives the opportunity for an expanded diet, more nutritional benefits and improvement to their social interactions, and overall it helps better their quality of life because they do not have to worry about strictly avoiding every single form of egg or milk.”
For this study, Anagnostou and her colleagues looked at the cases of children in the United Kingdom who experienced a reaction during a food challenge to baked milk and egg; specifically, they wanted to determine whether there was any difference between the symptoms that occurred in the children and in the severity of the reactions. The reason a food challenge was needed is because there are not any good predictors of who would tolerate baked milk or baked egg before they were actually challenged. The food challenge remains the gold standard diagnostic tool for food allergies.
Parents of children in the study were provided a standardized recipe for cupcakes that contained either baked milk or baked egg. The families prepared the cupcakes and brought them to the challenge unit, a dedicated area within the hospital where researchers would then gradually administer increasing doses of the cupcake. If the children were able to eat the cupcake with no reactions, they were clearly not reacting to the baked form of milk or egg. However, if they had reactions then the challenge would stop and they would be treated.
The study lasted for a six-year period from 2010 to 2016 and included 189 children. During this time, the team observed 90 children who experienced an allergic reaction to consuming baked milk and egg during the food challenges – 66 while undergoing a baked egg challenge and 24 while undergoing a baked milk challenge.
Two significant findings emerged from the study. The first is that the children who reacted to baked milk mostly presented with respiratory symptoms, like cough and wheeze, whereas the children who reacted to baked egg mostly presented with gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain and vomiting. Less than a third of the children in the baked egg group experienced respiratory symptoms while almost all (96 percent) children in the baked milk group experienced these. Less than half of the children in the baked milk group experienced gastrointestinal symptoms whereas almost all (98 percent) in the baked egg group had reactions involving gastrointestinal symptoms.
The second important finding is that the severity of the reactions was different. The rates of anaphylaxis between the two groups were similar, but when researchers looked into the severity of anaphylaxis for the children in the baked milk group, they noted that all of the kids in this group required two doses of epinephrine to treat their anaphylaxis whereas in the baked egg group the symptoms resolved with a single dose of epinephrine.
Anagnostou acknowledges that although her team studied children that were based in the United Kingdom, this research likely is applicable to children in other Westernized countries with similar rates of food allergies including the United States. More studies are underway to further investigate these findings.
Other contributors to this work include Dr. Mohammad Al Enezi, Dr. Gideon Lack, and Dr. Adam T. Fox. The researchers are affiliated with one or more of the following institutions: Baylor College of Medicine, University of Alberta, King’s College, and/or Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
Diversity in Real Estate Development has Arrived
Nationwide (BlackNews.com) — The National Black Economic Development Institute (NBEDI) is proud to announce its new Mixed-Use Development Finance Professional Certification specifically targeting African-American individuals with an interest in economic and real estate development. Classes are offered onsite and online in a highly interactive format utilizing certified professionals.
Five courses make up the Mixed-Use Development Finance Professional Certification for individuals who successfully complete NBEDI’s rigorous training. Individuals gain a cadre of technical skills and situational experience in single-family, multifamily, and commercial development. From structuring complex deals to sourcing financing and solving multifaceted problems, NBEDI gives learners a practical approach to understanding the unique methods of development analysis.
Economic and Real Estate Development is an annual Trillion-dollar industry. Dr. Raymond Shorter, Board Chairman, is keenly aware of the dearth of African American economic and real estate development professionals leading revitalization projects in the country.
“Whether you are in Kansas City, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Chicago, or any major city where there is a significant population of African American people, you will find gentrification of historically Black and urban neighborhoods with development projects more often than not led by members outside of the African American community. Our goal is to cultivate and certify culturally conscious economic and real estate development specialist that will implement balanced economic and real estate development projects,” said Dr. Shorter. The necessity of the organization’s mission is paramount considering the rise in the average rental rates in urban centers coupled with the slow growth of home ownership for marginalized communities.
From the smallest to the largest real estate development firms across the nation, it is painfully obvious that diversity and inclusion is much needed. Board Vice-Chair Lucinda Carr stated “NBEDI gives individuals accessible learning opportunities at an affordable price while enhancing individual’s credibility and opportunities to collaborate.” NBEDI is poised to certify its first cohort by April of 2019.
NBEDI is a not for profit entity serving persons from diverse backgrounds including city and state governments, public agencies, community-based organizations, professional organizations and banks. Individuals wanting to move beyond flipping houses or just performing construction should visit NBEDI to learn more. Visit www.NBEDI.org today!
School safety package is rushed, needs significant fixes
MADISON – The Assembly Committee on Education held a public hearing on six bills being rushed through the legislative process with the stated intention of improving school safety. Representative David Bowen (D-Milwaukee) issued the following statement:
“There are several issues with this legislative package– first and foremost, it does nothing to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous criminals and those who shouldn’t legally have them. Any effort to keep kids safe from shooters should include universal background checks and other safety measures with overwhelming public support but Republicans unanimously voted against it.
“The $100 million spent in this rushed legislation is offered to schools through a grant program at the leisure of the Attorney General, who has publicly expressed support for the misguided policy of training teachers to be armed with guns. The Attorney General would have the ability to reject a district’s proposal at his department’s discretion, including based on whether or not that school’s plan includes arming teachers.
“Instead of leaving the safety of our schools up to the extreme policy preferences of the Attorney General, funding should be provided directly to schools to improve the safety. School districts know what their needs are, and creating more partisan red tape is the wrong direction for Wisconsin at a critical time.
“Let’s adequately fund our schools and allow districts to create their own individualized safety plans with students at the table.”
Reparations for 40 Million African Americans finally possible thanks to a new cryptocurrency called Sankofa Black Gold
Sankofa Black Gold cryptocurrency is poised to enrich and empower 1.25 billion African people worldwide by 2020
MENLO PARK, CA (BlackNews.com) — After centuries of reckless disregard for the continent of Africa and its 1.25 billion African people worlwide, Sankofa Black Gold has finally come up with a way to fix some of the damage and provide new economic empowerment to them – including the 40 million African Americans who live in the United States.
When asked by reporters, “How and why?”, a spokesperson for the company, James Mason, the developer, went on to explain: “We’ve known for several years something needed to change in order for us to right the wrongs from America’s past and begin to move forward. From around 1619 to 1865 (a period of 246 years), slavery reared its ugly head and became the modern day ‘Gold Rush’ and tech boom combined in some.”
He continued, “Free labor flourished and was great for the economy and made lots of folks very rich. However, millions of African people paid a significantly heavy price for more than 5 generations of newly seasoned slaves.”
“Restoring some of the damage done to millions of African people worldwide, will require ‘all hands on deck’ for this monumental, yet achievable task.”
He added, “But make no mistake about it, we can do this. And we are committed to leading the restoration effort, which we expect will take roughly 5 years and cost around $100 billion dollars. Today, we have a wonderful opportunity to rebuild what has been destroyed culturally, emotionally, financially, morally, spiritually and otherwise with this blockchain technology.
Operating on a ‘Level Playing Field,’ Mason believes that we can help restore Africa and African people to its rightful beauty again.
On April 2, 2018, his company will begin the long anticipated start-up and roll-out of its new ERC-20 multi-functional token on the Ethereum Network called Sankofa Black Gold (SBG).
A spokesperson for the company says, “Sankofa Black Gold will be releasing roughly one billion coins at between 2 – 10 cents apiece during 5 levels of pre-sales, over a 10 day period. (2 cents every other day for 10 days.)” After that, they open to the general public for trading right around 10-12 cents each coin.
The company also alluded to an ‘A’ list celebrity spokesperson, but said it could not give any more details until it was official. However, he has promised to keep the media informed.
Mason went on to say, “We as a company are guided by a fundamental principle shared with us by the 44th President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, who so eloquently said: ‘We are the change that we seek.'”
Mason continued, “We are ever reminded of that principle … And we as a company shall never forget those words … they may be our ticket to the ‘promised land’.”
